Hurricane/Natural Disaster Preparation Guide
Did you know that Hurricane Season is from June through November?
Here in Hawaii, hurricanes are rare but it is always best to be prepared for emergencies or any natural disasters.

So what should we do to prepare?
- Develop a family disaster plan
- Secure homes and/or businesses
- Create a Disaster Supply Kit
What should we consider to develop a family disaster plan?
- Think about special people, pets or circumstances you should plan for
- Keiki or kupuna that may need extra help
- If you have pets, pack of food or crate
- Any medical devices that need electricity
- Do you have to evacuate your home? (Is my area at risk or in the flood zone?)
- If you do, set a location to meet at or go to if you for evacuating or if separated;
- If not, locate the safest area in your home in case of a disaster.

- Create an emergency contact list
- Designate an out-of-state or off-island friend/family that all family members know to contact.
How should we secure homes and/or businesses?
- Unplug all unnecessary appliances and shut off gas valves.
- Turn refrigerators to the coldest setting to preserve food in case of power loss.
- Check door locks to make sure they won't blow open.
- If you do need to evacuate, shut off electricity, gas, and water at their main switches/valves.
Secure or move outdoor items that might be blown away or torn loose.
What is in a Disaster Supply Kit?
- Water for at 3-7 days
- Non-perishable food enough for 3-7 days
- Blankets
- Clothing
- First aid kit, medicine, and prescription drugs
- Toiletries and hygienic items
- Flashlight and batteries
- Battery operated radio
- Keys
- Pet care items (if applicable)
- Important documents (ID's, insurance, medical records, Social Security Card, deed to house, etc.)
- Make sure cars have full gas tanks
- Cash
